It difficult to believe this is me. I am a man in a zoo, looking at a species that makes stuff separate from myself. This is similar to an episode of the old Rod Serling Twilight Zone series: There is a life-form in front of me, acting out its reason for being. I am watching it, like an alien watching a human for the first time. The spectacle in front of me is me. Truth is bizarrely correct. I am watching an intelligent life-form make sense of the cage it is in. I am watching it unravel that which exists but must be unearthed.
These are three excellent drawings. Each made by me. Each different, and each is true. I am more than any one part of me. I am made of many parts sewn together by a confluence of life experiences. These are discrete, disparate experiences, all valid because they are in my true, living memory. This is the reason for variety in my art. I accept the search is not about finding one image, but about finding the many images that arise because I am able to sing many tunes in my true voice.
Yesterday was enjoyment in my studio behavior. There is a long distance risk in Drawing No.1, and an overall quest for harmony, despite a clogging of forms, in Drawing No.2. Both drawings play well with values, and also with variety in form and line. Compositions are energetically moving while secure in their rectangles.
I am hoping to run. However, I am still learning to walk. Yesterday's drawing, and (actually) all the drawings of this past week, are me taking careful steps. One by one, they come slowly, carefully, deliberately. I am practicing. I am in search of the intrinsic and fundamental. Fundamental to me is form, pattern, compositional movement, variety, contrast, surface energy (created by rhythmic marks), and the dynamic of light versus darkness. This week has been weak on volume of works and the activity of painting. It has been one of low energy, but quality introspection. There is rhythm to discovery, invention, and creativity. I have great belief that living is filled with rhythm and rhyme. The idea that rhythm and rhyme can be mimed in art is beginning to be apparent in my drawing. At last! This technique of suggesting action, character, expression and emotion, by using only gesture and movement, is happening here.
Obvious to me, these drawings are prelude to my next painting, 2017 No.10. I intend to finish 2017 No.9 in the next three or four days.
