Re-entering the studio after a few days of life's distractions brings with it the need for emotional and intellectual release. Because of this, introspection and self-criticism comes a lot easier than usual. I use the word "liquifying" in the title because I need to liquify my work in the way that Willem de Kooning was said to have liquified cubism. In yesterday's second drawing (above) I took a step in that direction. Yesterday's first drawing was me inspecting myself and my abilities; the clarity of this drawing (more in person than the reproduction seen here) is reminiscent of some of Picasso's drawings around 1920, ones that art historians have likened to the portrait drawings of Ingres.
