This painting ("2016 No.5") is the most complicated problem I have ever given myself. How am I going to solve the local color with the atmospheric color? How am I going to make these forms relate to one another, and to the emotive qualities I seek, without appearing so referential as to be distractingly sculptural. There are several elements which grab my attention. They are awkward: (1) the orange shape at the bottom, (2) the curtain-like form in the upper left, (3) the nondescript background in the upper right, and (4) the unfortunate fold in the canvas that is noticeable as a horizontal crease running across the upper portion of the canvas. I have my work cut out for me. Today will be an interesting day.
Yesterday's drawing is what it appears to be: a study for the painting.
