I allowed the "Secret Life" of my mind to have its way; I altered the painting, "Balancing." Yesterday was an unusually divergent day in the studio. I walked in thinking I would make my warm-up drawing (which I did), then go straight to finishing the painting "Pulling Onions." After having worked on it a couple of days ago, "Pulling Onion" was on my painting wall. Its surface was dull. I realized it was in need of retouch varnish, as the flat finish of the dried paint had taken with it the depth of color. I put "Pulling Onions" aside, placed "Balancing" on my painting wall, did my warm-up drawing, painted on "Balancing," then finished the day by taking "Pulling Onions" outside and spraying it with retouch varnish. I took "Pulling Onions" back inside and left the studio for the day (the odor of vanish is intense, so after varnishing I allow a painting to dry overnight before I re-enter the studio).
Yesterday's drawing is a good one, with its forms discovered while drawing, albeit not terribly inventive in content. The painting "Balancing" went though a mini-revolution. Gone is the weird bug, a new yellow "cloud" has formed behind the man, and the blue triangle is nearly vacant, but calling for something, perhaps a white cloud. There is also considerable change in the man's form.
Today I am hoping to go into "Pulling Onions" and finish it, but I did not sleep well, so no promises. It was unusually hot and muggy last night. It felt tropical, although Tropical Storm Lee is not supposed to be here for several days. Perhaps it is left over heat and humidity from Hurricane Irene. In any case, it was uncomfortable and has left me with lower energy after a poor night's sleep.
